Software Development & Technical Assistance

I build the software and AI that turn microscopes and cobots into automatic inspection systems, and I work on the instruments at the bench.

SIMITECNO is a company in Rome that sells, installs and supports instruments for 3D digital microscopy, non-contact metrology, X-ray computed tomography and non-destructive testing, and it is the exclusive Italian distributor of HIROX digital microscopes. I work alongside the product specialists on two fronts. At the bench I prepare, configure and test the PCs, software and instruments that go to demos, shipments and fairs, and I troubleshoot them when they fail. In software I turn the microscopes and cobots we sell into automatic measurement and inspection systems; AI coding agents write most of the code from my specs and tests, while the method, the hardware tests and the checks on customer data are mine.

What I do, every day

On the bench

  • Preparing, configuring and testing the PCs that run the instruments: operating system, drivers, vendor software, camera runtimes and the PC-to-instrument link.
  • Installing microscope software on a new PC and fixing what breaks: six faults solved in one session, from a missing camera runtime and registry key to the USB driver and a 4K-only interface.
  • Troubleshooting by elimination: a black live image traced to an optic the software didn't recognise, so no white balance was loaded; fitting a calibrated optic with the control unit off brought the image back.
  • Assembling and disassembling instruments and accessories, and swapping optics and cameras, for demos, shipments and fairs.
  • Functional tests before anything ships or moves on its own: read-only checks first, then ±10 µm stage moves, then focus, capture and lights; on the cobot, a stop criterion for every step.
  • Preparing and packing instruments, accessories and PCs for shipments and events, and checking that every kit is complete before it leaves.
  • Getting instruments, PCs and demo software ready for trade fairs, with an exhibitor badge and a booth-setup pass at the BIMU machine-tool fair in Milan.
  • Acquiring and organising microscope images for datasets and tests: views per side and position, and the µm-per-pixel calibration checked on the live instrument.
  • Proposing bench fixes when the camera can't see: a camera mount designed in parametric CAD, and backlit or black perforated benches with grazing light for semi-transparent chips.

Software & AI

  • Driving instruments from code: a Python bridge to a vendor DLL over Windows messages, and REST services for a microscope and a cobot.
  • Explainable computer vision for metrology: scale-bar calibration, layer segmentation, sub-pixel edges and a hard stop when the scale is missing.
  • Few-shot defect detection that learns from good parts only (a frozen DINOv2 patch memory), used on probe tips, cutting tools and river invertebrates.
  • Safety rules for moving hardware: closed command lists, state machines, watchdogs, honest error codes, explicit re-arm, and a fake controller that replays field failures.
  • Validation that doesn't flatter the model: models frozen before blind batches, one variable changed at a time, statistical limits stated next to the result.
  • Shipping to the shop floor: one-click installers, release zips and an offline app with embedded Python, tested in a clean environment with the network blocked.
  • Data pipelines over messy company archives: old Office formats, truncated zips, and privacy classified before any AI reads a document.
  • Directing AI coding agents (Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode) with specs, rules and tests; I review every step and test it on the real hardware.

Customers, demos & training

  • Turning a customer's annotated photos and e-mails into a written spec with agreed priorities.
  • Live demos on the real system: the customer of the cobot cell signed after a click-on-marker demonstration.
  • Explaining results in plain language: progress presentations for customers and a 45-page measurement report.
  • Technical calls and remote support with customers, manufacturers and partners, including a diagnosis for another company's microscope integration: a configuration issue, not their code.
  • Guides for operators and colleagues: a technical guide for the lab PC, an operator manual and a PDF guide shipped with the inspection app.
  • Learning to run installations, demos and customer training on site, first alongside the product specialists.

Documentation & video

  • Product videos made from code: a data-driven engine that rendered the trade-fair series in eight visual styles, with silent versions for the booth.
  • Demo videos recorded by script and edited in code: titles, zooms and captions over a real software session.
  • Customer reports generated from HTML to PDF, with CSV and Excel exports for every measurement.
  • Knowledge management: a second brain of the company archive in which every fact keeps its source.
  • A strategy deck that compares an image analyser the company built in the 1980s with today's vision system, technique by technique.

One person, the whole ride

I'm Danilo, a computer science student in Rome who builds things that work. At Simitecno I'm the software and AI person in a company that brings 3D digital microscopes and metrology to Italian industry: I set up the instruments and write the software that lets them inspect and measure on their own. Outside work I build websites and booking systems for local businesses and my own products, like a video farm that publishes on 10 channels every day. I find the problem, write the spec, build it with AI agents and measure the result before anyone sees it.

What keeps the ride going

Nobody handed me a track. I've been working since I was a teenager, I study while I build, and I ship things people actually use. AI agents make me faster; the drive is mine.

  1. I put myself on the line

Since 2019 I've worked to pay my way: lifeguard, supermarket cashier, baker, delivery rider, waiter at weddings and hotels, assistant barman at the 2023 Ryder Cup, floor lead at a world medical congress, catering lead. I learned to show up, own the shift and talk to anyone.

  2. I study while I build

I'm a computer science undergraduate at Tor Vergata. The projects on this site were built alongside exams and a part-time job, in the evenings and at weekends.

  3. I find the problem and sell the fix

I walk into local businesses that have no site or a broken booking flow, show them a working demo and build the real thing. I built a tool, Atelier, to do that at scale.

    See it inAtelierHair salonPersonal trainer

  4. Hands and code

At Simitecno I unpack, assemble, configure and test instruments before they ship, then write the software that makes them inspect and measure on their own.

  5. I ship and keep it running

Done means in production: a video farm publishing on 10 channels on a schedule, booking engines taking real appointments, sites scoring 100 on accessibility. Agents write a lot of code; I set the rules and measure the result.
